Combustion synthesis of a functionally graded NiTi-[TiC.sub.x] composite
Article Abstract:
Combustion synthesis is an alternative technique for producing advanced materials and is dependent upon a highly exothermic chemical reaction to become self-sustaining after only a short energy pulse is applied to intiate the reaction. A NiTi-[TiC.sub.x] functionally graded material (FGM) is investigated that combines superelastic and shape memory capabilities of NiTi with the high hardness, wear, and corrosion resistance of [TiC.sub.x], CS is employed to produce a FGM from 100% [TiC.sub.x] ceramic to 100% NiTi intermetallic.

Stress-strain-temperature behavior due to B2-R-B19' transformation in NiTi polycrystals
Article Abstract:
Thermomechanical behavior of superelastic NiTi wires is investigated experimentally by two developed in-situ experimental methods capable of detecting and recognizing the activity of various ddeformation/transformation process in NiTi and by micromechanical modeling. Results for NiTi bars and wires revealed three types of thermo-mechanical tests-mechanical loading at constant temperature, cooling under constant stress and recovery stress tests, which are presented and confronted with results.

A phenomenological model for superelastic NiTi wires based on plasticity with focus on strain-rate dependency caused by temperature
Article Abstract:
A phenomenological model for NiTi is developed and compared with experimental results to illustrate methods to account for transformation bands in plasticity-based models. Recommendations for enhancing the model to include transformation bands and a slight transformation before the development of the first band are given.
